Escape | Line of Fire | Lights| Stay Awhile | Open Arms | Mother, Father | Who’s Cryin’ Now | Where Were You | Dead or Alive | Don’t Stop Believin’ | Stone in Love | Keep on Runnin’ | Wheel in the Sky | Lovin’, Touchin’ Squeezin’ | Anyway You Want It
In 1981 there was a new company called MTV trying to break out nationally in America. The station was focused on presenting rock music to the masses in an unique way that would allow the viewer an audio and visual experience never before seen. MTV contacted one of the hottest touring bands around, Journey, to film and broadcast a show in Houston, Texas. Journey was touring on the heels of their now classic Escape album.
Fast forward 24 years and Journey is not the same band. Gone from this line up are drummer Steve Smith and singer Steve Perry. The latter has caused the most commotion among the fan base. While replacement Steve Augeri does a fine job, one only needs view one minute of the opening track to realize that yesterdays Journey was amazingly unique. The band, however good they are now, were better then. Perhaps it is a bit unfair to compare the two as Journey in 1981 were at a creative peak. This was the band at the top of their game.
The DVD is produced by Steve Perry with full cooperation of the band. Now, this does not mean that Perry is going to get back with the band but it is good to see them working together again. Perry took his production role seriously and the end result is an incredible DVD that will transport the viewer back to 1981. The track list is amazing and the sound and picture quality top notch.
Previous to the release of Escape, Journey released a live album titled Captured. Consider this to be as good as that one with the bonus of having most of the classic Escape performed live. In true Captured sprit, the accompanying CD contains the studio version of "The Party’s Over." The DVD also features interviews from each band member circa 1981. This is a MUST for all Journey fans.
