I really liked Chris, was shocked when he went home, we had voted for him that night like 6 times too... One thing I can't stand (even with chris) is the vibrato in his voice (and others on the show) I don't know why but when a singer has that vibrato constantly it drives me insane, sounds like a sheep stuck in their throat... Ace, Bucky, Elliot, Chris, Kat, Paris all had that vibrato in long held notes, I guess maybe some like it but not me... Give me pure long strong vocals like Perry sings... By far the worst was Carmen Rasmusen from past idol (season 2) Simon loved this chick and she just sounded like a sheep to me with that constant vibrato in her voice... Bill

Hey it wasnt just me who thought she sounded like a sheep! www.absoluteastronomy.com/enc1/carmen_rasmusenI know I am bad...hehe from the link above --------------------- Carmen had had trouble controlling her natural vibrato vibrato quick summary: Vibrato is a musical effect where the pitch or frequency of a note or sound is quickly and repeatedly raised and lowered over a small distance for the duration... The critics often compared her to a sheep .....

Bill, that's really baaa-aaad. (sorry, couldn't resist) Maybe that's what Mariah Carey does that makes her sound so awful to me - its like she drags out the notes and goes up and down, just to show off her range or something. Annoys the crap out of me, lol... sparkle

The Vibrato I am talking about is when a single note is sang and it sounds as if someone is rapdily jabbing them in the stomach as they sing it, listen to the very last note of this clip how the note sorta "vibrates" www.goodrichvocal.com/Music/womens/ex.35.mp3 My sister took vocal lessons for years and I was in Music Theory and Choral for 4 yrs and I remember a few of the vocal coaches coming up and literally JABBING a fist into your diaphram to make you project your voice, it was also explained when you project your voice that "annoying" vibrato and false nasal sounding stuff goes away with practice. I remember this one girl that made me want to go scratch chalkboards when she sang but by 1/3 of the way into that year she was sounding great just from practice and losing her annoying nasal and vibrato tones (mainly by projecting her voice from the diaphram). The stuff I think your talking about (Mariah and ALOT of the Idol kids and even famous singers sadly do) is what most call "runs" or "improvising" basically taking a musical phrase or the last note of a phrase or song and running it up down back around sounding like someone is strangling them - all at once in an effort to sound impressive - whatever , it IS annoying for sure especially when its one maybe two or three notes and they go all haywire it almost sounds like they are going into convulsions hehe Give me strong and pure anyday - old school I guess Bill

Thanks for explaining that Bill! I have noticed a lot of the Idol kids doing that - they seem to think it makes them sound more impressive but it's just annoying!
