I agree. Thoughts?? popblerd.com/2012/08/20/blerd-briefs-steve-perrys-journey-looking-for-a-new-mrs-kenny-g/The Journey tribute band known simply as “Journey” is currently rolling through the Northeast. The band even includes original members Neal Schon & Ross Valory, as well as 80s-era keyboardist Jonathan Cain. They stopped in at Jones Beach on Friday, August 10th. Opening up for the Journey tribute band was the actual Loverboy (ugh!) and Pat Benatar. I did not attend. While the idea of seeing the band that defined my childhood seemed like a good idea, Journey ended in 1997 with the departure of Steve Perry. While new singer Arnel Pineda is a great vocalist, Neil Schon appears to be in it for the money. After Perry left Journey in 1997, Neil replaced him with Steve Augeri, who sounded very much like Perry. Jeff Scott Soto then replaced Augeri in 2006, and a year later, Pineda was found. While Pineda isn’t trying to imitate Perry (to which I commend him), the band could call themselves something other than “Journey.” The bottom line: I’m not into tribute bands. I have no interest in seeing “Fair Warning, Riders on the Storm, Led Blimpie or Almost Queen. Seeing someone else singing Journey’s songs won’t work for me. Every band has an evolution. They change over time, things happen – band members join, leave, die, whatever. Steve Perry wasn’t Journey’s first lead singer, but for me, from childhood to infinity, he will always be the definition of who they are as a band. I can’t escape that. In related news, the Man with the Golden Voice, is rumored to be working on a new solo album. In an interview, Steve Perry revealed that he has written over 50 new songs and is rumored to be working on his first solo album since 1994’s For the Love of Strange Medicine. Hardly anything has been reported since then. I can’t wait! We all need new frontiers. Indeed.

Well you know what I'm already going to say because I said it so many times and still feel the same way. There is only one Journey for me & that is WITH Steve Perry. And that is the way it will remain for me forever. Some bands could effectively change their lead singer & still be just as successful, because they didn't have to find a singer with a similar sounding voice. In Journey's case though , Neal & Jon could NOT just go out & find ANY singer to replace Perry, they HAD to find a singer that could TRY to duplicate his signature sounding voice & that is not an easy task at all. And Besides the whole idea of replacing Steve Perry in the first place was & still is just totally ridiculous anyway.Steve Perry is in his own league , NO singer can match his vocal talent, no matter how similar their voice sounds to him. Oh yea, they had Augeri ,& JSS & now Arnel, but no matter how good of singers those 3 are, (please understand I am not knocking their singing ), Journey will never be as GREAT as it was with Steve Perry as their lead singer. The casual fans will accept Augeri, JSS, & Arnel singing those classic songs, but the die hard fans that HEARD & SAW Steve Perry sing & perform with Journey know better & remember how fantastic Steve Perry was with Journey & long for him to return to SINGING, whether it be with Journey or on his own. Well those are my thoughts.

I agree. As i've mentioned a few times, I vaguely remember seeing Journey some years back with Steve Augeri (I think) and I thought they were good, i've always liked Journey (sight unseen-because of their music) When I saw Steve A. I had nothing to go by, with that said, once I "discovered" Steve Perry it was a done deal. I don't even want to hear songs sung by Steve A. or Arnel, I attempted to listen to Mother Father by Dean, it was good, yes, but sorry Steve and only Steve can sing that for me. Just my opinion.

Tribute band is a good way to call what N,R & J have. Wisdom is reflected by SS wise decision to not mess with the unjourney aka journey tribute band. When journey first existed it was a jam band with some vocals by an average vocalist. They enjoyed jamming but noone was lining up to see 'em and their albums always fell flat. Listen to them and you can understand why. Now slip on Infinity and what do you notice? Yeah the voice BUT also very importantly a change in the song structure, lyrics, hooks etc. Put on Evolution and the transformation continues.... etc. each album.... until...... Escape. With Escape you have GR exiting and JC entering. SP & NS are the core with JC providing music as well. BUT ladies and gentlemen what we have JOURNEY escaping the GR atmosphere and propelling into space and fittingly new FRONTIERS. That all "said" it is seems quite obvious to me and may I say millions of others that you CAN NOT just replace SP as you would a basic tool/piece of equipment. If Journey was a car (Corvette) what has been going on is the equivalent of buying a Camaro and getting a kit to make it look like a Corvette. To the eye not only is it obvious it is not a Corvette but it also doesn't have the engine of a Vette. So what is the freaking purpose? Years of service does not make a band a BRAND. Brand loyalty comes from providing a product, reliably that delivers what the customer/consumer wants then expects as well as value for the dollar and loyalty to the customer. I KNOW WHAT I AM TALKING ABOUT. What NS etc are doing is providing private label selections of a brand name product and getting ticked that the consumers know the freaking difference. Marketing 101 people and the current members of the tribute band do not know this or believe that they can pull it over on everyone and everyone definitely includes SP. What NS, RV & JC did not understand when SP said "don't break the stone" - is he was referring to the brand. The hard foundation of a tried and successful product, experience & relationship (with fans). sigh So yep I agree....
