Steve Perry rejoins Eels on stage, explains his return

Steve Perry continued his surprising comeback in Washington D.C. last night. Last Sunday, the ex-Journey frontman returned to the stage for the first time in 20 years during Eels’ show in St. Paul, MN. On Saturday evening, Perry rejoined the California alternative rockers during a gig at D.C.’s Lincoln Theatre.
The unlikely supergroup first performed Eels’ “It’s A m*th*rf**k*r” from 2000′s Daisies of the Galaxy. Perry explained his personal connection to the song, saying, “It is a song about profound loss. I recently lost someone who is the love of my life and I revisited that song. It meant even more to me.”
Before running through a stripped-down cover of Sam Cooke’s “Only Sixteen” and the same Journey classics they’d done in St. Paul (“Open Arms” and “Lovin’, Touchin’, Squeezin’”), Perry revealed that it was in fact Eels frontman E who prompted him to return to singing in front of audiences. “For years we’ve been friends,” Perry said while gesturing to E. “And for years we’ve played croquet, we’ve gone to dinners, we hang out. ‘Why don’t you come out sometime in sing?’ ‘Well, you know, I haven’t done it in a long time. I dunno.’ ‘Why don’t you get your ass out and sing with us?’ he says. I want to thank The Eels for getting I disagree out and singing.”
Perry seemed genuinely delighted to be back on stage, and current Journey singer Arnel Pineda would be just as pleased to let the man return to his place in front of the band. “He should come back. His voice [is] still [there],” Pineda tweeted. “Missed that voice.” He went on to say he’d happily step aside for Perry. “He can take over too,” he wrote in a separate tweet. “[It's] his righteous place anyway..wanna see them happy together.”
If he keeps doubling his stage time this way, we’d say Perry will be ready for a full journey set after just four more Eels shows.
