Good interview. He mentions some physical issues, nothing to do with his voice, I hope.

Excellent interview by Steve! He really opened up for the interviewer & gave the fans more insight about how he felt about some issues.
As for him deciding whether he will sing again, no matter what he chooses to do regarding singing, Steve Perry will always have my full support!

I think that was one of the most candid, direct interviews I've read with Steve. I really admire Mitch LaFon's interviewing style. He asked questions and then *let* Steve answer them. He let him search for the words he wanted to use without interrupting him...even Uncle Joe kept interrupting during OTR. I think that is why some perceive him as being evasive or not answering a question...when they just don't give him time. LaFon also didn't fall into the rut of asking leading questions in the hopes of getting a particularly *juicy* response.
You could tell that Steve was just ready to talk about things now that he has worked hard to be diplomatic about in the past. I'm glad to see him finally speak out about how he really feels about the current lineup moving on without him. I believe he made it clear that he didn't just choose to walk away from Journey. He was given an ultimatum and forced into a decision that was...and still is...very emotional for him.
Hopefully, that will put to rest the inane suggestions that maybe he and Steve A. could share the stage!!!
I believe that he also wants to make sure that people don't forget how great Journey used to be. It really shows how much he loved his time in the band and what they created together.
************************************************************ ML: Let's talk about the DVD - Live in Houston 81. Why did you accept to get involved with the project? Wouldn't it be too much of a heartache?
SP: "The answer is yes - it was too much of a heartache to look back. When I first heard the tapes and I remember that show, it was too painful to think what it once was, but the only thing I could not do was... I'm a fighter for the music. I'm a fighter for the songs and a fighter for the performances and I refuse to let them be evaporated into time. If I do anything, I'm going to fight for those performances to be heard and the band is out doing what they're doing and I was approached by SONY to do it, so I said absolutely. Since, I produced the first compilation DVD. So, I got Allen Sides and we did the 5.1 and stereo mixes together then I did the editing. The interviews and all that was painful too. It was tough."
************************************************************
I believe with every interview he is coming around more and more to wanting to do something. It seems he just doesn't know yet what or how he wants to do it, but I do believe that we will be hearing something from him. ***********************************************************
SP: "Isn't that amazing? I think the Internet is so freeing to music as we've come to know it. I think it's the best thing that has ever happened. It's phenomenal because as an artist you've never had so many choices. You just never have. I could get somebody right now to build my own site and put downloads on my own site. I've yet to do it though."
ML: Is there a reason?
SP: "I'm just a little bit... you're going to ask me 'what is it, right?' But I don't know."
ML: It's the question everybody has been asking, right?
SP: "No, we've been talking mainly about the DVD and the performances."
ML: I apologize...
SP: "We can talk about this. It's ok. I don't know - it's a tough one... (pauses)... Twenty-four years ago when I did that DVD - when we recorded it for MTV... (pauses) It was a different landscape at that time, of course. MTV had aired for the first time in August of '81 and three months later we were recording this for MTV. It was a brave new world with this video music thing... (pauses) It was a different time - we had a mission as a group... (pauses) I emotionally was unstoppable... (pauses) My mother was alive and pulling for me. My father (though they weren't together) was pulling for me. My grandfather was alive... The whole landscape of that has changed... (pauses) You lose some of the incentive that you didn't realize was driving you to do good... to do it... to do IT. Now, that it's been done I'm trying my best to digest it. When I was doing this DVD, it was an emotional rollercoaster that I didn't expect. A friend of mine warned me because he knows me well. He's a TV director and he said 'I know you. You're going to get in there and be mixing and editing and it's going to be rough on you.' I said ' Ah, no biggie man - c'mon I did the other DVD.' And he said 'but that was assembling videos and synching up new masterings. This is going to be different. It's like making a mini-film.' And oh, God - he was right. It drove me... It dragged me through a plethora of emotions that I didn't expect. When I heard 'Open Arms' I got choked up. There are certain vocal things I did in 'Open Arms' that I'm not sure I'll be able to pull off exactly like that again because it was such a moment and I had reached beyond the master recordings to what I knew it could be. For example the lyric in the second verse 'wanting you near' that lyric is sung exactly the way I wanted it to be sung and I didn't know I hit it. I didn't know I got it. So, I'm sitting there mixing and watching the QuickTime video because I have to pay attention to audio and visual... so I'm watching it and just being dragged through... (pauses) through the whole thing again. The Whole Thing AGAIN! I'm dragged through our time together. I'm dragged through, 'what happened?' We were great together and then I'm dragged through the people who thought we weren't great and who used to belittle us in the press and I thought 'f**k them too'. How can that be f**ked up? We were great! See you not a very nice persons... you know what I mean? We weren't f**ked up - you used to tell us we were faceless and corporate and all these horrible things and all we were trying to do was keep our focus and play what we loved. Now, I'm looking back at it for the first time as a person in the audience... I'm not in the band and it's been years since I've been in the band. It's been years since I've been on that stage. I'm an older guy and this young kid up there on that stage believed in what he believed in and d**ned if it wasn't pretty good and I got emotional about it. I just felt vindicated. I really felt vindicated for my beliefs and my faith and my tenacity that I got such a bad rep for... it's just that I was NOT going to lay down. Betty Davis said "if you have a bad reputation - you must be doing something right.'

I love this interview. It just reminds me once again how much drive he had to make them the best they could be. They never appreciated him, even though he had incredible vision. I just hope he decides what he wants to do and gets into a studio soon. I'm sorry, but that's just way too much talent to be sitting on the sidelines.

In my opinion Steve doesn't have to worry about the fans ever forgetting how great Journey used to be.
I will ALWAYS remember all those FANTASTIC songs & concerts tours that Journey gave to the fans. There is certainly NO WAY that I could ever forget the how wonderful Journey used to be with Perry. They ( Perry, Smith, Schon, Ross, & Cain) all left an incredible impact with their "tremendous talents" that will last a life time.
Now the music is being passed on to our children to enjoy..... so the music of the Perry years with Journey will NEVER be forgotten, it just continues to live on & be enjoyed forever.

I read the interview! I am so happy Stevie has finally found inner peace and happiness in his life. I think in his time away from Journey he has had a spiritual awakening and found support in the lord and savior, Jesus. OMG! Wouldn't that be the greatest, an album of christian gospel tunes from Stevie! I'd buy them all lol One other thing, I find it extremely troubling how the reporter inserted cuss words into the interview. My Stevie wouldn't talk like that. I don't know what kind of legal charges he can file, but he should def. look into it. Your friend in Jesus, Lorraine

Too true. I guess I just hold Steve to be a little too perfect, y'know? I can relate though. Today I stubbed my toe and began to say H-E- double hockey sticks, but caught myself and listened to the radio instead to calm down. PS Guess what song came on? You guessed it! None other than Faithfully sung by the one and only Steve Perry! Your friend in Jesus, Lorraine

I would really hate to differ but i am going to, STeve has swore in interviews and its been on the radio as well. About Seperate Ways i remember for one! "The band was gonig through alot of break ups and alot of F*** You' were going on" he is no saint, he burp, farts, picks his nose, swears, admires women and lets them know how beautiful they are. Yes, there is a lot of blame slung at Perry. But, I'm sorry...there was 5 members in that band at any given time, one insulting Road Manager and one Overbearing Manager...you cannot blame one person...I don't care if your name is Neal, Herbie or Jon...one person is NEVER to blame in a situation such as Journey became. That's all I'm saying on that.
Let the BT'rs slam Steve about the article. I hope it sticks in their craws for weeks!!! And weeks! And weeks!!! *evil snicker!*
Finally, Steve speaks up about how he feels 8 years later. Thank Goodness!!! I said it before, I LOVE this interview!!!
Hugs!

I checked out the Journey board on the Melodic Rock site. Looks like that's where all the nasties that were kicked off the official Journey board ended up. They're also trashing Steve for his comment about Augeri. I guess it's ok for his own bandmates to call him "Steve Perry with a perm" but not for Steve to call him a sound-alike. sparkle

I don't know how anyone could get upset with Perry for his FIRST public comments about Augeri, when Neal & Jon have made MANY negative remarks towards Perry. And I don't think that what Perry said about Augeri was really all that bad anyway.
There are some fans on "another board" that have RIDICULOUSLY bashed & blamed Perry for everything under the sun concerning Journey, so I see nothing wrong with Perry stating how he feels now.
Perry gave an Excellent interview!

I agree. I'm glad to see Steve finally speaking out. If it had been Neal saying the same thing, people would be praising him for being so refreshing and shooting from the hip, telling it like it is...blah, blah... It is also interesting that the usual culprits who try to invalidate every interview that Perry does have...once again...found the most insignificant point to use to try and make Perry the focus of their ire. This was a very long very candid interview. Steve and the interviewer, Mitch spoke about many things...the way the music business has changed, the way Steve feels about fighting to preserve the legacy they all created, and the fact that he is moving toward recording again. However, all their little minds can wrap around is one sentence they think slights Augeri. It justs shows how desperate they are to make Perry the bad guy no matter what he does or says. I'd like to see him take the gloves off altogether. I don't know how anyone could get upset with Perry for his FIRST public comments about Augeri, when Neal & Jon have made MANY negative remarks towards Perry. And I don't think that what Perry said about Augeri was really all that bad anyway. Lorraine i get your jist of your analogy but i think it was different for steve and the boys.
i think he is just miffed at how it was all handled w/ultimatiums and backstabbing that neal, jon, ross all did to him. and he is showing it now.

Yea, there are fans that just want focus on one little comment Perry made about Augeri, that was really no big deal.
To me, what the focus should be about is Steve talking about recording & possibly singing again. That is WONDERFUL news for us fans!!!
And believe me, I WANT HIM TO SING!!!! As I said before though, no matter what he decides to do, I will support him.

May I please suggest that we do not refer to other boards here - and especially give their addresses etc. We do not need to be a source for slinging -etc. or give so called reasons for them to come over and cause problems. Unfortunately all Journey fans do not agree with one another anymore - let it be.

I wish Mitch Lafon would have pursued Steve's last comment about wanting to sing "one night" with the Rolling Stones. I thought to myself...WHAT? Did Mick ask him to do that? It would be interesting to know why he mentioned that in his last closing statement. Somewhere there is an interview with Marty, the lead singer for the Rock n' Roll Soldiers that Steve mentioned. Marty is the guy that Steve took to a recent Stones concert. They sat in the VIP section and went backstage after the show, so that could have been when Mick asked him if he wanted to sing. Marty also mentions the band Kasabian, who is listed on Steve's IPod downloads. Sounds like Steve is really considering making some kind of music. If he has "closed the store forever" as far as personal management goes, I'm thinking he won't ever tour. That makes me sad, but I would settle for something new on CD or to download from Itunes. Another thing I sensed from re-reading that interview was that he still won't completely close the Journey door. It is like he always leaves it open just the slightest fraction. I don't know if that is because he can't bear to set it in stone that it is truly over, or if they came to him and talked that he would listen. Alot to digest from that interview. Glad to see him speaking up and getting it off of his chest. Lord knows Neal has spent the last 7 years gettting things off of HIS! It's Steve's turn to vent a little, and as "spicy "as he could be if he were to let it rip, I think he has contained himself VERY well so far! I'd actually love to see him come out swinging, cause that would mean he is sooooooo over it.

I'd like to hear more about that, too, PN. Do you remember when that concert that Steve went to happened? The interview that Mitch did with Steve was very recent, so maybe there will be a Part 2?? I like the fact that Steve is free from any label confines, and can do whatever he wants. It sounded like he was just checking everything out. There are so many more possiblities now with the internet downloads, and Steve seemed interested in that. It would also be great if he could help out some younger bands like the RockNRoll Soldiers. I would like to see Steve do some Sam Cooke. I wish Mitch Lafon would have pursued Steve's last comment about wanting to sing "one night" with the Rolling Stones. I thought to myself...WHAT? Hello all,
Mitch Lafon here.... I did the Steve interview -- couple of things : The interview took place on Dec 9th 2005 between 5PM & 6PM eastern time....
As for the Rolling Stones.... That was an off-the-cuff remark... He said the band was playing near him soon and he was going to go check it out and added... I would love to sing with the Rolling Stones.... I see it more as a fan's wish.... Like me saying I would love to sing with Journey or Kiss....
