www.melodicrock.com/JOURNEY: STEVE AUGERI RETURNS HOME - JEFF SCOTT SOTO FLIES IN: Steve Augeri has stepped down as lead vocalist for Journey on their current tourand has returned home. This follows recent reports of vocal problems. His last show for this tour was in Raleigh, NC on Tuesday night. During recent shows he has struggled with his voice and as I understand, he was aware before the show that this would be his last performance of this tour. Although plagued with problems from the outset of the show, Steve handled himself with dignity and grace and has to be applauded for his contribution to the band and the manner in which he has handled himself. Jeff Scott Soto, Neal Schon's bandmate in Soul SirkUS has flown in to meet up with the rest of the band and will make his debut Friday night in Bristow, VA. A statement has been prepared by Journey management: JOURNEY FORCED TO MAKE LEAD SINGER CHANGE ON NATIONWIDE TOUR "Jeff Scott Soto to assume JOURNEY lead singer duties starting on July 7th in Bristow, VA due to Steve Augeri throat infection. Due to a chronic throat infection, Journey's lead singer, Steve Augeri, has been forced to leave the band's current nationwide tour with Def Leppard. Jeff Scott Soto, who has previously performed with Journey guitarist Neal Schon, will assume the band's lead singer duties starting with the July 7th show in Bristow, VA. Steve Augeri's condition will be closely monitored by his physician to determine when he may be able to rejoin the tour. According to Journey, "Steve's been suffering with an acute throat condition since before we kicked off the tour with Def Leppard. We were hoping he'd be in well condition to handle the rigors of the road but unfortunately it appears to be a chronic condition requiring total voice rest. We all wish Steve a speedy recovery." For the latest tour dates, please visit www.journeymusic.com <http://www.journeymusic.com>."

It makes you start to wonder if it was Jeff Scott Soto who started the rumours that Augeri was miming so he could get the job instead ;D I feel sorry for Augeri coz he could´ve said no to performing live a long time ago but I guess he had a lotta pressure from Schon and Cain coz touring gives the guys a good income. You can´t really say that they are living on the sales of the new records I don´t think Augeri will come back, his throat infection isn´t acute....he have had them for a long time so my bet is that Augeri has done his last show with the band which according to the reviews was a sad one. I wonder what Perry is thinking about another new lead singer?

Throat infection? I hope for his sake that's all it is and he can recover. If he's ruined his voice trying to hit those high notes night after night he's liable to find himself back at the Gap. Kaj, I can't speak for Steve P. but if I was in his shoes I think I wouldn't want anything to do with that bunch other than their autographs on royalty checks, lol.

It is good to see that Journey did the right thing for "their singer" who was in real need of a break to heal from his throat infection. A singer should always put his own health needs FIRST, that is how they make their living, no singer should ever put their singing carreer at risk that way.
I'm not that familiar with JSS's singing, but I'm just happy to know that Journey will NOT be using tapes for lead vocals any more.
Hey Bill, it GREAT to see you SO EXCITED!!

Lori,
Did you see the movie ROCK STAR?
The vocals in that movie were Jeff Scott Soto
He has also sung on his own (solo) and with Yngwie (another AMAZING guitarist), Soul Sirkus, and tons of other bands as lead and backing vocals.
Check him out at youtube just search jeff soto LOTS of clips even him doing Journey stuff
When you say ROCK this guy shows up and burns the mutha down.
Seriously tho I realize he probably wont do the heavy stuff but D A M N I hope I can get some lawn seats at least to go see this.

Seems there are a bunch of fans who are now pissed that augeri is not singing and willing to sell off their tickets. Wondering what happened to all of that "just want to keep Journey alive stuff? It is all about the music, blah, blah, blah!? Good Luck! But unless Perry is singing I won't be joining you

Anybody remember this chat?? There was a buzz about JSS taking over Journey even then!! *Somebody* even asked him about it. I don't remember the exact date, but I think it was a couple of years ago. I think ole Neal polished Augeri off on purpose!!!
I joined late, so forgive me if you have already answered this...is there any true to the thought that you may take over the lead singer role in Journey? SA has been having problems with his voice and you have been doing Journey songs in SS and seem to have more chemistry with Neal. SS : it's amazing how rumours start....
JSS : I wish I had a nickel 4 everyone I've been linked 2! arden : You mentioned joining Journey on stage this summer
Teri : you'd be a millionare Kelbo : I found 6 WP albums in my local hmv and got mine two weeks later they were all gone lol
JSS : I never mentioned that
Patrick : ...you'd be millionaire before xmas ;-)
arden : and have been performing Journey songs with SS
Schutt_Nutt : hey jeff =o) what kinda mix of stuff will you be doing this tour - all sorts from all your bands (like soul sirkus or maybe skrapp mettle ;o) ) or mainly more of the solo stuff? JSS : I said joining Neal on tour, before & after the shows, 2 work on music..... arden : just a natural lead in
uncle heFTy : And withJSSB -so its not unusual
JSS : my involvement at the shows are as a spectator.
Bob-Quibel has left the chat Jesus-Spain : would you reedit a little number of copies of The Boogie Knights? it's a great album uncle heFTy : Jeff TWT saw Pontus on the Antharx tour Jesus-Spain : perhaps as a "bonus cd" ....
arden : then you aren't going to join them onstage? JSS : we do Journey stuff live because we have a guy in the band who wrote the tunes we play!!!
ANNE : 12
JSS : No, I would if asked but those people aren't paying $50 for a ticket 2 hear me sing!
Teri : aaww Jeff, you'd be giving them an added bonus for their money
arden : They aren't paying $50 a ticket to hear Ross sing either!!

Keep trying Bill! -----------------------
Yeah but I am a big guy and Stacey and Lauren wanna go too! Lauren LOVED the Solomon Burke show we took her to, we got kids swimming ear plugs and they worked perfect for her, she loved it and of course has grown up on Journey music so she would love that even more, hoping to score some lawn seats and go check it out.

Thank you, Arden!
Arden said:
He may have done just that, Arden. I will never understand Neal, I've given up trying. I am a fan of Neal's guitar playing, no matter what he's done he is an enormous talent.
JSS is an awesome singer. He's also a Steve Perry fan himself. He'll be good for Journey, heck, I think I'll even like them again, lol! Man, this is tough!!! While I love Steve Perry and will forever be a fan of his, I respect JSS enormously.
I do hope that Steve A. is able to recover from whatever is going on with this throat. I never wished that man any ill will, he just wasn't the person to front Journey, imho. A great vocalist and performer is what they needed from the beginning, not someone like "nice guy" Steve A. JSS is just that...a great vocalist and performer. I'm almost as excited as Bill over this, and will now look into getting tickets to Cincinnati's Riverbend for the 25th of this month.
Hugs!! Lee

www.jeffscottsoto.com/english/From Soto's website: A New Journey - In My Own Words As you may have heard by now, I have accepted the opportunity the team up with Journey & help them continue their current tour with Def Leppard. I must start with my heart goes out to my dear friend, Steve Augeri, who has been dealing with some potentially threatening throat problems for some time. He is a BRAVE soul to go in & tackle these songs night after night, year after year & an amazing job he has done. Unfortunately he is only human, he is not bionic & the road can takes it's toll on the best of us out there. I couldn't be more sympathetic myself, I too experienced problems a few years back & had to go through nodule removal surgery. It is a risky operation with no guarantees that one's voice will be as it once was ever again. I pray that Steve's condition is not too severe & with the proper down time, he will come back stronger than ever!! In the meantime, this in itself is a bit of a dream for me...1st, starting a group with the mighty Neal Schon and Soul SirkUS was one thing, but now singing all of these songs, as I did in my teens on a daily basis in my car, in the shower, etc., with the creators is pretty mind boggling. I take on this responsibility with absolute pride & respect to the legacy Journey have created. It's no surprise to anyone who knows of my musical history & background that Journey cuts into my influence quite deeply, strange but true, I know some of these songs better than my own. There were 3 singers who did impact & mold my style during my teens, Steve Perry, Sam Cooke & Freddie Mercury, my mentors in song, performance & of course voice! I understand there will be many naysayers in this decision to continue the tour, especially for those who are expecting at least one of the 'Steve's', instead seeing yours truly up front, but I will do my best to uphold the reputation of the band & it's fans. It's a tough decision for a band, especially at this caliber, to take such a risk like this mid-tour but I couldn't be more proud to be a part of it. Remember, I too am & always will be a fan, with that I hope we can enjoy this ride together! JSS

Thanks for posting that Arden.
It is GOOD to see JSS respond to the fans SO quickly, given that Neal & Jon have stayed VERY quiet, since this all began. I liked what JSS had to say too!!

I agree!! This not only lets Neal skirt the issue, but puts it all in Augeri's lap. Can you imagine him doing an interview without it being brought up? It's too bad that he didn't just step down before the tour started instead of crashing and burning in Raliegh, NC!! cannot help but think this is the easy way out for neal and jon NOT to admit that they had SA lip synch and cover it up. s

Thanks for the info. Looking forward to a concert review! Hopefully this guy will have the backbone to rein in Schon's ego. Even though I think Schon's a jerk, I'd like to see Journey back out there kicking butt instead of just going through the motions.

Yes I feel the same sparkle. Neal and Jon personally? jerks, but musically TALENTED and GIFTED. I Love listening to Neal's guitar. I hope JSS is a better fit and no more lip synching. I hope SA doesnt get this on his shoulders and shelved permantly.

Neal is still making the decisions and they aren't going to be any better this time around than they were the last time, so I'm taking all this singer change stuff with a grain of salt. JSS may be more outspoken than Augeri, but this is still more money for a gig than he's ever seen. He won't be rocking the boat or going at it with Neal (or Jon) any time soon.

I say, just Admit the TRUTH to the fans!!! Instead though, THEY say NOTHING & that makes them look worse for not addressing that issue once & for all with the fans. As for JSS , I think what he said on his own website was fine. I do think JSS is a GOOD STRONG SINGER & will bring in HIS OWN TALENT to the band!! With all that said though, I'm still sticking with Steve Perry because HE Co-wrote those songs, Sang the songs FIRST, and made the songs famous FIRST!! It just can't be any other way for me! Lori

Very well said Lori! I don't think Neal & Jon will ever admit that they never went anywhere with Journey after Perry. I mean sure they raked in all the cashola that the name offered but as far as saying they accomplished anything near as what they accomplished with Perry would be ABSURD! They are guilty of destroying Journey and have proved so time and time again. I really do not see Steve Perry coming back at all not even for the Rock~n~Roll Hall of Fame . It's a d a m n shame what Journey turned out to be.

Yeah, and then there's this from a Philly paper: Big '80s alert First there was vocal acrobat Steve Perry. Then there was forgettable sound-alike Steve Augeri. Now, the pop mothership known as Journey sports a new front man: Jeff Scott Soto.
Who?
Beginning today - in that Journeystronghold of Bristow, Va. - Soto will sing for Augeri, who has been sidelined with a chronic throat infection. Soto previously performed with Journey guitarist Neal Schon. Augeri's condition will be monitored to determine when - or if - he can rejoin the nationwide tour with Def Leppard. Don't stop believin', Journey junkies. Maybe Steve Perry will bring his glorious tenor out of super-group retirement and legitimize this Journey rip-off.

Well, it looks like the Augeri fans are sucking on gaspipes, and the Perry fans have pulled up a comfy couch and popped plenty of popcorn. Odd that the two groups who hate each other the most understand the most about how each other feels. From melodicrock.com: SOTO MAKES HIS JOURNEY DEBUT: It sounds like there are some happy Journey fans in Bristow, VA tonight. The first lot of feedback and reviews are coming in and it's all good for Journey and Jeff Scott Soto. I heard from Jeff briefly after the show. I think he is glad to get the first show under his belt, but clearly had a blast and is on a major high. Obviously the band has had limited preparation time for this show, but I was surprised to learn that there was NO full rehearsal and only a 10 minute soundcheck to get the show on the road before the band hit the go button! Tonight saw a new set list, which was: Escape . Be Good To Yourself . Ask The Lonely . Only The Young . Neal Solo . Stone In Love . Wheel In The Sky . Lights (Jeff dedicating the show to Steve Augeri) . Open Arms . Chain Reaction . Every Generation . Faithfully . Separate Ways . Don't Stop Believin' . Lovin, Touchin, Squeezin. Of note - drummer Deen Castronovo didn't sing any lead for this show aside from a few lines here and there. The first review I got was from Troy Barwick. It reads: "Just got home from the Bristow, VA show. WOW! Jeff Scott Soto was amazing. He sounded perfect. No flubs. Right on with every song. His voice sounded just like Steve Perry. Tonight we saw a band that seemed to have an energy they haven't had in years. I was floored by how perfect they sounded, and Jeff's energy was amazing." Seems like reviews are starting to come in about JSS at the show tonight, from what I have seen so far is it exactly as I hoped (good reviews) high energy, sounded great etc. Man i wish i could go to this detroit show now with JSS up there...
